Bowling, gentle exercise
Gentle exercising is needed for all, especially for the people above 50. Exercising helps keep fit and fine. Bowling could be a gentle exercise for people over 50's. Bowling is a sport of individuals and everyone has their own ideology and approach to the game, even though physical and mental skills are being taught and have been taught over the years.
For all 9-99
There's a common perception that, with the possible exception of croquet, bowling is the most sedate of games. All you do is roll a ball gently from one end of the green to the other and have a chat along the way before adjourning for a nice cup of tea. The reality however is much different. Anyone playing the game for the first time or even resuming after a layoff, will experience the morning after stiffness that proves bowling is more than a gentle saunter. And of course there is also the skill factor. Bowling is, in fact, one of the country's best-kept secrets. It comes in various guises like lawn bowls, short-mat or carpet bowls, ten-pin bowling, and the great Cork and Antrim game of road bowling or bowls. There's also the related sport of horseshoe pitching. Bowling is played regularly by tens of thousands in this country. It affords good exercise, exciting competition and social contact. And it suits all ages from 9 to 99.
Bowling as an exercise
To get an 8 to 16 pound ball to go where you want it to go takes considerable skill, good flexibility, and some strength. But in terms of energy expenditure, bowling is not a taxing sport. It's classified as light exercise. Walking is considered light to moderate exercise bowling one game consumes about 30 to 50 calories. An average person walking at a normal pace would burn about 50 calories in ten minutes. Bowling can prove to be a useful gentle exercise for people over 50's.
