Exercise suitable for the people with total hip replacement

Hip replacement is very major surgery and for the first few days, it is better to relax. . However, it is important to start some activities immediately to deal with the effects of the anesthetic. It helps the healing and keep blood clots from forming in the leg veins. The doctor and physical and occupational therapists may give specific instructions on wound care, pain control, diet and exercise. Pain management is important in the early recovery. Although hurt after operation is quite variable and not entirely unsurprising, it does need to be controlled with medicine.

Activities at home:
1. Resuming normal activities - after going one should stay active. The key is not to overexert it. While one can expect some good days and some bad days, one should notice a gradual improvement over time.
2. Weight bearing - Be sure to talk about weight bearing with the physician and physical therapist. Their suggestions will depend on the type of implant and other factors in the situation. Revision hip surgery may require waiting a longer time without putting weight on the leg.
3. Driving - the person can begin driving an automatic shift car in 4 to 8 weeks. If you have a stick-shift car and the right hip was replaced, do not begin driving until the doctor says. The physical therapist will show how to slide in and out of the car safely.
4. Sex - Some form of sexual relations can be done or resumed 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.

Other activities:
Walk as much as possible once doctor gives the go-ahead sign, but remember that walking is no substitute for the prescribed exercises. Walking with a pair of trekking poles is helpful and adds as much as 40 percent to the exercise one gets when walking. Swimming is also recommended. One can begin as soon as the sutures have been removed and the wound is healed. It will take approximately 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. By means of a pair of training fins can make swimming a more enjoyable and helpful exercise. Satisfactory activities include dancing, golfing and bicycling. Avoid activities that absorb impact stress on the joint like tennis or badminton, contact sports, squash or racquetball, jumping or jogging. Lifting weights is not a problem but carrying heavy, uncomfortable objects that cause to stagger is not wise.
