Pilates and Yoga Mat - New Bottle and Old Wine

Pilates is many times wrongly explained as yoga. The exercises that Pilates promotes are totally different from what Yoga entails. The exercises have one big similarity, i.e. both the exercises require mental concentration and breathing control. Maybe it is due to this similarity that Pilates has been coupled with yoga.

Are Pilates and Yoga Mats the Same?

It is common knowledge that both the exercises require a good amount of mental concentration and clarity as well as a number of drills by which the body becomes strong. These exercises are usually supervised by an exceptional trainer, one who has mastered both yoga and Pilates.

The yoga mats were initially made of jute, but now days you will find these made out all conceivable materials - cotton, velvet, silk and even PVC are the materials used for these types of mats today. The yoga mats are usually about 4-5 mm thick, capable of sticking on the floor during tough exercises and to a great are extent crease proof. The yoga exercises are not vigorous; hence the mats were needed to withstand movement when these exercises were performed.

When you look at pilates and yoga mats, it is obvious they are not interchangeable; complementary, maybe. Pilate's exercises belong to a different regime, though many times it looks like both Pilates and yoga look like interchangeable titles. Such pairing as the pilates and yoga mat is something that happens when the user is not really aware of the basic difference of these two exercises.

Whenever the pilates and yoga mats were tried together they met with lukewarm interest. Hence, it is better to separate these two interests clearly and market them independently. Because it is in this way that one can learn separately about terms such as pilates and yoga mats.

Therefore it is clear that they are not the same thing. It is easier to highlight the differences when both these mats are looked at separately. It is then that each of the conditions becomes clear in terms of what each stands for and why it so happens that they could be grouped. While yoga and the yoga mat belong to India, the Pilates exercises originated in Germany. It is also clear that both belong to different concepts which are similar in only one point which is breathing. However, they both pursue a very different philosophy.
