Swimming can arrest the ageing process by improving your balance, posture and muscle strength. Result is a youthful sheen together with a marked reduction in the incidence of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and high blood pressure. So no matter your fitness level, if you are over 50, join a swimming club or saunter to the neighborhood swimming pool.

Swimming as fun

Swimming is a leisure activity that makes few demands on an ageing physique. Since the body is 90 % weightless in water, it is injury free way to exercise. In fact, doing gentle laps in water turns swimming into a fun way to get a full body workout. It is so refreshing and invigorating that especially those over the age of 50 seldom classify it as exercise, also it poses no risk of bone breakages or pulled muscles as the water buoys up the body; this injury prevention aspect of swimming is its foremost advantage for those over 50. Again, several laps will not exhaust an ageing physique. Instead swimming in moderate motion mode will reenergize. Swimming is thus a flexible exercise that comprises a whole range of easy movements. Swimming easily fits into your daily routine; it is a fancy way to be adventurous. Since swimming is not physically demanding, it will not tire you out. Swimming is then the perfect exercise option that may be incorporated in the daily exercise schedule of a person over 50. Then again, swimming is such a sociable activity that the over 50s can turn it into a group activity. Invite all your friends for a swim.

For the over 50s swimming is a feel-good activity that will keep you physically fit, mentally agile, sociable and independent.
