Understanding the Medical Causes of Excessive Sweating

You are considered as having an excessive sweating problem if you sweat regularly throughout the day or night, or if your sweating problem is causing you issues in your regular life, either professionally or personally. Excessive sweating is classified as being either focal or generalized, and it is very important to know just which type you have, as the causes and treatments are very different.

If you have focal excessive sweating, then this means that your sweating occurs in one or more of the following 'focal' places: palms of the hands, soles of the feet, armpits or face. The cause is not yet known and as well is not known as being associated with any other conditions. However in some people focal excessive sweating is hereditary, and so if there are others in your family who suffer from sweating problems than you are more likely to as well.

Generalized excessive sweating means that you sweat more all over your body, rather than in a few places in particular, and this form of excessive sweating is much less common than the other. However, it is usually caused by an underlying medical condition, such as anxiety disorders, various heart problems, damage to the nerves in the spinal cord, and as a side effect to certain medications.

Medical Causes of Excessive Sweating

There are various different medical causes of excessive sweating, for example if you have just had a serious operation or surgery and you notice that afterwards you are sweating more than normal, then this is known as being one of the medical causes of excessive sweating. Another example of medical causes of excessive sweating is overactive sweat glands, and this is usually not a temporary condition, meaning that you will have to live with it for the rest of your life, although there are ways to treat and control it.

The only real way that you will be able to determine if there are any medical causes of excessive sweating in your case is by seeing your doctor, as they are a knowledgeable and experienced medical professional and they will be able to tell you whether or not there are any serious underlying causes to your sweating.

Remember that the types of treatment you will be able to use will vary, depending on whether there are medical causes underlying or not, and so you will not be able to seek out any form of treatment before you are properly diagnosed and assessed.
